An architect of Canadian and Malagasy nationality, she is currently based in Antananarivo, Madagascar. She has worked in Canada and various regions of Madagascar with diverse stakeholders, allowing her to navigate multicultural environments with ease.
Academic Background and Certifications
She obtained her Master’s in Architecture with a specialization in Project Management from the École d’Architecture de l’Université de Montréal in 2007, after earning her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the same institution in 2004. She also completed a minor in Urban Planning at the Institut d’Urbanisme of the Université de Montréal in 2001.
Professionally, Joan is a licensed architect with the Ordre des Architectes Malagasy since 2011 (OAM131) and has been a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada since 2012. She also accumulated over 5000 hours of internship as a member intern of the Ordre des Architectes du Québec since 2006.
Professional Experience
Before permanently returning to Madagascar in 2013, Joan gained substantial experience as an intern architect. From 2009 to 2013, she worked with Colin Fraser Architect in Montreal, Quebec, assisting the Senior Architect in design, coordination, and site management. She also worked for Forme Studio and Miljevic & Miljevic in Montreal in similar roles. Joan is now the Managing Architect of Trano Architecture, which she founded in February 2013. In this position, she has led numerous projects, including the renovation and construction of offices, training centers, schools, laboratories, courthouses, and clinics in Madagascar.
In 2020, she held the position of Director General of New Cities and Housing at the Ministry of Territorial Planning and Public Works. Between 2018 and 2021, she also served as the Secretary General of the Ordre des Architectes Malagasy. Joan also contributed voluntarily as an architect in the technical committee for building permits for the Urban Commune of Antananarivo from 2017 to 2019, overseeing architectural requirements for the building permit approval process.
Since January 2021, Joan Razafimaharo has been working as a short-term architectural consultant for the World Bank Group. In this role, she provides technical support to several projects, including the reform of building permit procedures in Nosy Be and the Integrated Urban Development and Resilience Project for Greater Antananarivo (PRODUIR). She also assisted in the implementation of post-Kenneth reconstruction and resilience works in the Comoros and contributed to an Urbanization Review in Madagascar, focusing on the land and housing market, including informal settlements in Antananarivo and secondary cities.

Joan Razafimaharo has shared her ideas and expertise through several publications and exhibitions. In 2023, she participated in the collateral event “Reclaiming the Centre: The Architectures of Global Africa” at the Venice Architecture Biennale. In 2022, she contributed to the Google Arts & Culture platform with the article “The Twist, Turns, and Tones of Madagascar’s Seasonal Awakening.” She also published in the special edition of BAUWELT in 2021 with “Antananarivo at Threat” and in the Encyclopedia of Sub-Saharan Architecture by DOM Publications with “From Great Expectations to Great Deficit: Madagascar’s Subsidized Housing Projects.”

Joan est maintenant Architecte-Gérante de Trano Architecture qu’elle a créé en Février 2013. Dans cette position, elle a dirigé de nombreux projets, dont la rénovation et la construction de bureaux, centres de formation, écoles, laboratoires, tribunaux, et cliniques à Madagascar.
En 2020, elle a occupé le poste de Directeur Général des Villes Nouvelles et des Logements au Ministère de l’Aménagement du Territoire et des Travaux Publics. Entre 2018 et 2021, elle a également été Secrétaire Général de l’Ordre des Architectes Malagasy. Joan a également contribué bénévolement en tant qu’architecte de la commission technique du permis de construire pour la Commune Urbaine d’Antananarivo de 2017 à 2019 pour superviser les exigences architecturales pour le processus d’approbation des permis de construire.
Depuis janvier 2021, Joan Razafimaharo travaille comme consultante à court terme en architecture pour le Groupe de la Banque Mondiale. Dans ce rôle, elle apporte un soutien technique à plusieurs projets, notamment la réforme des procédures d’obtention de permis de construire à Nosy Be et le Projet de Développement Urbain Intégré et Résilience pour le Grand Antananarivo (PRODUIR). Elle a également assisté à la mise en œuvre de travaux de reconstruction et de résilience post-Kenneth aux Comores et a contribué à une Revue de l’Urbanisation à Madagascar, en se concentrant sur le marché foncier et le logement, y compris les établissements informels à Antananarivo et dans les villes secondaires.
