I am heading towards my 4th year as a Teacher for 3rd-year Civil Technician at the Institut Supérieur de Technologie in Antananarivo. Full disclosure : I am not teaching Architecture but “Techniques de Construction appliquées à l’Architecture” following our code of ethics but more specifically MALAGASY WOOD ARCHITECTURE. Here a few examples of their works and you can see from yourselves how talented future generations of Civil Technicians and Engineers in Madagascar trained by UFR Bois de l’ESSA Forêts are.

– ZAFIMANIRY CASE

in 2021 Students have to study diverse structural detailing for Wood Architecture. They will have to build models and prototypes along with working with hand-drawn sketches in order to understand the origine and relations between techniques and problem solving in construction. These students took the effort to go along with the context and immerse in UNESCO-preserved ZAFIMANIRY Heritage in Madagascar

– TRANO KOTONA

in 2022 Students were invited to do same exercices but we opened a wider field of references and we were very very proud to see them jump into the reconstruction/recollecting exercices. They taught us about very very deep foundations required for these kind of constructions. It appeared around 15th century and is still present in Ambohimanga. We couldn’t help but admire their dedications to details and the motivation to learn our traditions ways of building.stay tuned for 2023’s programs and as usual you will be invited as guest juries or fun supporters.
