“I am fascinated by Malagasy biodiversity because, to me, it feels almost extraterrestrial. For a botanist, it is extraordinary to encounter so many endemic species and such overwhelming diversity in a landscape that has already been almost erased from the map.
And yet, very few people seem to care. We speak of Malagasy pride, we wear ‘za gasy’ T-shirts, but in reality… anything truly Malagasy is undervalued, diminished, and unappreciated. My work is to show how useful it is — and above all, how beautiful.
This country, which mourns its poverty, already has everything it needs to thrive. We simply need to open our eyes and value what we possess, what no one else on Earth has.”

Florian Fraix-Bavuz, better known as Flo le Tsantaha, is a Malagasy botanist, biodiversity expert, and advocate for the recognition and protection of Madagascar’s endemic flora. Trained in plant biology and specializing in ultralocalized species, he is among the emerging researchers actively documenting, safeguarding, and publicizing the island’s exceptional botanical richness.

His work sits at the intersection of scientific inquiry, ecological mediation, and public awareness. Through field expeditions, accessible documentation, and a strong presence on social media, he demonstrates how Malagasy biodiversity—too often neglected or dismissed—constitutes one of the most valuable natural heritages on the planet.

Florian is known for his direct engagement with local communities, his research on rare or threatened plants, and his exceptional ability to transmit scientific knowledge with clarity and passion. His vision is rooted in a profound conviction: Madagascar is not poor in resources — it is rich in unique living heritage, and the path to ecological and economic resilience begins with recognizing and valuing this natural abundance.
